Protest planned before family planning vote
WECT - Wilmington

Protesters will gather Monday in downtown Wilmington to let New Hanover County Commissioners know they're being watched. Organizers say this event  is a follow-up to the March 15 rally when more than 100 people gathered to show their disapproval of the county commissioners' decision to turn down a nearly $9,000 grant for IUD's. The rally is expected to include members of Planned Parenthood, Lillian's List and several candidates running for office this November.

Gov. Bev Perdue and women in politics
Charlotte Observer

Cotham's experience of bringing her child with her to the legislature - something male lawmakers don't do - and the attendant multi-tasking it requires underscore the challenges that women can face. That's probably why many females only turn to political office after they've retired and their children are adults.

Cotham said Perdue has been actively trying to change that by encouraging women to seek political office and mentoring those already serving. "I'm grateful to the governor for blazing the trail, and setting a positive example," Cotham said.

A midnight madness we should do without
Charlotte Observer

Republican leaders of North Carolina's legislature acted unethically - if not unconstitutionally - in the middle of the night Thursday...Republicans voted to stop teachers who belong to the N.C. Association of Teachers from having dues automatically deducted from their paychecks. Aside from whether it's good policy to single out one organization for different treatment from all others, the dark-of-night vote was exactly the kind of disregard for transparency that fuels voters' disgust with politicians.
